About stacking and YOLOing into stuff

Don't worry, I have not turned into one of those #yolo #swag kids! No, I want to talk about a computer game today. And about some people I met while playing this game.

"Friendships over the internet aren't real." That's what you hear when you tell people about friends you met through video games. I guess it depends on how you define friendship. True, you cannot call those people on a Friday night to go out drinking and you might not even know their real name. But on the other hand you share the same interest (a video game) and you may find you have more things in common.

During these last few months, I spent quite some time in Tyria, the fictional world of Guild Wars 2. It's in this world that I met some totally awesome people to form a guild with. Together we fought dragons, saved the cute quaggans and battled our way through dungeons. These dungeon runs ranged from 10 minutes to nearly 6 hours. Yes, six hours. These endeavours, together with other shenanigans like exploring the major cities for hidden corners, molded us into a good team and even a bunch of friends.
Today two of those people announced they're quitting the game. I respect their decision yet I couldn't help but feel sad about it. Thinking back on the "old times" made me laugh and shed a tear at the same time.

One person, known as Razz or V, would always assume command of the operation. Even when he stepped in for someone else in the middle of a dungeon, he would straightaway tell us to (my apologies for the technical lingo, dear readers) "stack right here so we can L.O.S. them around the corner. I'll throw a reflect wall and then Nico can cast his wall afterwards. Ready? Then I'll go pull the enemy with my Golem in a Box." Don't ever let him hear me saying this, but his advice and tactics were really good and pulled us through on numerous occasions! He was also the guild mate who ALWAYS found new tricks to glitch stuff and enter undiscovered areas. The following game update usually fixed these glitches, which made him slightly grumpy and amused us to no end.

The other person was V's brother Paen aka P. While V held briefings before engaging a difficult enemy, Paen showed off his shiny new weapons and yell things like "ERMAGHERD, ROCKET BOOTS, YOU GUYS!". And then, while we stacked and V went to pull one enemy, Paen would opt for his own battle plan. This own plan turned out to be a slightly adapted version of Leeroy Jenkins. 'Adapted' meaning he shouted "YOLO" before running in, realizing he made a terrible mistake and saying "Oh sh*t, oh guys, halp?" Or he would ask where I was ("east of that city") and then run toward me, not find me and realize he went west instead of east. Occasionally we would also have serious conversations about the real world. Especially Paen, the "chaotic" one, turned out to be someone who I could talk to about serious stuff.

The contrast between V and P could hardly be bigger: one thinking about battle plans, the other just running in. But what they had in common was a great sense of humour that often had everyone in the guild choking on their drinks or dying in the game because we were laughing too hard to focus on the fight.

If someone tells me "friendships over the internet aren't real", I will disagree with them because to me friendship is having fun together and listening when someone is feeling a bit down. And that's exactly what me and my guild mates do.

So when V told us they were both quitting the game I felt sad. Even though we will try to keep in touch and we might find a new game to play together, this guild will not be the same as before. I will definitely miss the structure V brought during dungeon runs and the crazyness that followed P.

V and P, thank you for all the fun we've had so far. I wish both of you the best of luck in life and I hope to see you again someday!
